Cocktails with Ty #1: Mezcal Sour

Introducing "COCKTAILS WITH TY"! We'll be posting a new cocktail or, "Scroungetail" as we like to call them, on the "THIRD THIRSTY THURSDAY" of each month! Ty (aka Tyler), my husband, and I have been talking about featuring this on The Scrounge for a while now, so I'm very excited to finally be doing it!

He has always enjoyed making cocktails at home and although he won't ever admit it, he is pretty great at it! None of them are super complicated and he's always using what we have at home to Scrounge them up. Living in Chicago, we have so many great restaurants and bars with phenomenal mixologists, so we love trying out fun new cocktails, which is what inspires many of our cocktails at home. I do love my wine, but sometimes I enjoy a nice refreshing cocktail.

Ty is a big inspiration for how I came up with the name and concept of, "The Scrounge". He is always pairing foods together that I would have never thought to pair, but then I try them and I'm shocked at how tasty they are. He is definitely my inspiration for being adventurous with bold flavors and creative pairings. We always refer to cooking as, “Scrounge Sessions” it was even in our wedding vows!

I'm excited for you to get to Ty a bit more and I know you'll enjoy his Scroungtails as much as I do! For now, here is one fun fact about Ty....he's from a small town in Wisconsin called "Spooner" so his nickname in college was "Spooner", feel free to call him that :)

Our first Cocktail with Ty is the Mezcal Sour! Mezcal is one of our favorites liquors, we love the smokey flavor! The good news is this is a very "scroungeable" cocktail (see "The Scrounge" section below), so no worries if you don't like mezcal, you can use whatever your favorite liquor is. First of all, this cocktail is so delicious and refreshing! Secondly, it's the perfect Scrounge cocktail because the ingredients are simple and versatile enough that you can use what you have at home. I hope you enjoy this as much as we do! Cheers to our first cocktail with Ty!

Ingredients:

* makes 1 drink

  • 2oz Mezcal, gin, whiskey, bourbon, or whatever liquor you have at home

  • 1/2oz honey syrup - make with 1 part honey to 1 part water

  • 1/2 Lemon juice

  • 1 Egg white

  • Ice

  • Bitters (optional)

Preparation:

  • Make honey syrup first - bring 1 part honey to 1 part wate to a boil, then simmer it on the stove until it's combined, about 5-10 min. Or if you have simple syrup you can use that, we didn't have any so we Scrounged and made our own.

  • Pour all ingredients into a shaker: mezcal, honey syrup, 1/2 lemon juice, egg white and ice

  • Shake with ice

  • Strain ice out using a small strainer and shake again with no ice. (This froths up the egg white to give the drink its creamy texture)

  • Pour into your glass of choice, we like using coupe glasses (pictured above)

  • Add a few drops of bitters on top if desired - use a toothpick to swirl the bitters to make it look pretty :) You can also add a garnish with the skin of the lemon or whatever citrus you use (see photos above for how Ty did it)

The Scrounge:

If you don't have these exact ingredients, Scrounge with the things you have at home! For example, if you don't 'have mezcal – use whatever liquor you have a home, gin, whiskey, bourbon, vodka, etc. If you don't have honey – use simple syrup, maple syrup or scrounge up just about any syrup by heating something sweet and adding different agreements with 1 to 1 parts water. If you don't have lemon – any citrus you have on hand, orange, lime, etc. You may create something even better!
